Chili peppers are native to South and Central America but are now cultivated in warm climates around the world including Nigeria. There are many varieties of chili pepper all over the world but many of them are produced based on regions and environmental conditions. Varieties commonly produced in Nigeria are; 1) Bird peppers – Ata Eye ( Capsicum fruitescens ) Var.Minima This varieties is shot in length and very hot species. Ripe and unripe bird peppers are used for preparing pepper sauces. This pepper is assumed to be the hottest pepper in Nigeria. 2) Cayenne pepper or Red pepper – Sombo (Capsicum fruitescens ) Var.Fingerh. This is the most common type of pepper in Nigeria. It is also called Red Hot pepper or Guinea spice. Its main peculiarity is that it can be stored for a very long time in the form of powder. It is very long and thin. It is a bit mild as regards to its hotness. 3) Capsicum annum ( Var.Baccatum ) – Ata wewe. This species is also common in the market. They are in various sizes and smaller ones seemed to be hotter than the bigger sized. 4) Capsicum annum ( Var.Chacoense ) – Tatase. It is very mild in taste and very reddish in color.
